Worked on Travis's wedding present mostly, and am still trying to find some long series to replace MI-5/Spooks now that I'm done with it. (Call the Midwife is just for watching with Fizzy, and with the time zone difference and me trying to reset my sleep schedule those watchings might be few and far between, and I think there are only six episodes at the moment anyway.) I want to watch Next Gen but that means getting past embarrassment squick heavy episodes like "The Naked Now" and I haven't been able to manage that. There's always Stargate: Atlantis but then I'd get sucked into the fandom (that I'd been back into when Fizzy got me into Supernatural, and then I got into Sherlock), and I don't want to leave Sherlock as my primary fandom yet because my daydream fic has been my primary anti-despair the past several months.
I've got the two Star Trek Reboot movie novelizations downloaded through Audible, but the first one is also hard to get through because it's...well, as irritating as the first movie, but I want to have the novelization of the first movie listened to before moving onto the second, and reviews of both audiobooks said that reading/listening to the books made the movie easier to understand (which doesn't bode well for the movie, but this is the first time I've ever watched a Star Trek movie for something other than its Trek-ness--I'm going to be watching it for Benedict Cumberbatch and in spite of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban, and it's not like the Reboot movies are real Trek anyway. It's Teeny Bopper Trek or Shallow Pretty Actors Trek or JJ Abrams Has Committed Sci-Fi Sacrilege That's Almost As Bad As The Starship Troopers Movie Trek...anyway).
I'm going to stop rambling and go to bed now. I wish I could just stay asleep until life (the universe, everything) gets better. Wake me up when the world isn't ruled by money and I can actually "follow my bliss."

Thinking of the good and bad parts of each job, and worrying about the gaps in my employment since I married Chris, but mostly thinking about the good, interesting, and bad times I had back in Sarasota between getting out of the Navy and moving to Alaska with Chris. I think I might write out a few--when this workshop is over, because right now I'm still doing the homework itself (and watching Call the Midwife with Fizzy via our separate accesses to the series and Google Talk). I didn't really get into LJ until not right before Chris and I moved to Alaska (and of course Dreamwidth didn't exist back then), so most of the stories will be new (to being typed out on a blog, at least!)...
So I've been up for awhile, and I'm yammering, and my class starts at 8am and goes until 4pm and I am SO gonna crash when I get home because I really need to get on a strict awake-during-the-day/asleep-at-night sleep schedule as soon as possible so it won't be as much of a switch when I do get back to being gainfully employed.
Later, all. :)

Working on my brother's wedding present and waiting for the Ativan to kick in (it makes me sleepy) so I can go to bed early (for me, I didn't get up that long ago) and be ready to go for a resume workshop that starts tomorrow (at eight fucking am, I guess I need to start having a regular sleep schedule anyway) and goes through Thursday.
I got a purse that's small enough for my phone and my change purse and not much else (downside: first purse I've bought that won't fit a trade paperback), saw Iron Man 3, AND there's a new chapter of The Shop Boy. A good afternoon and evening! :)
ETA: Shit. Shit. Shit.
I swear I emailed myself the pictures I took of the progress of my brother's wedding present (daily progress pics over a week give or take!) and they're not at my Gmail, and they're not at the iCloud email thingy and damn damn damn.

About a week ago Chris and I went to AT&T to get Chris a new phone. There was one he wanted that was $1 with a two-year agreement, which was fine because we're planning on staying with AT&T indefinitely anyway. But they had a promotion going where you could trade in your smart phone for a $100 credit towards a new phone. Which meant I could upgrade to a $200 phone essentially for free, and if I got the Samsung Galaxy S4, I could get the Samsung Galaxy tablet for $200, and it's usually $500 or so. I took the deal, but the phone is okay-not-great and the tablet isn't particularly useful (the tablet I actually want is a Nook HD, which among other things supports stuff in EPUB format which the Galaxy tablet doesn't, and it's heavy and larger than I'd wanted for a tablet). But I've gone and gotten like $100 in accessories for the phone and the tablet (plastic screen covers, a hard cover for the phone and a soft cover for the tablet) but I just don't want either device. I'd rather go back and get an iPhone 4 or 5 but that'll mean $100+ in wasted accessories.
Also with my old phone (an iPhone 3GS which I wasn't even planning on trading in that day, it's old but there was nothing wrong with it), when I was reading on it, I could press on a word and have the option for a dictionary definition for most English words and phrases, including a lot of British slang which is useful since I'm mostly in Sherlock fandom these days. With the new phone I get "select all," "copy," "share," "find," "translate," and "web search." Everying but the dictionary option. There doesn't seem to even be a dictionary option on the phone. I could download an app but the point is that I want the convenience I had with the old phone. If I wanted to do a web search of a phrase from a fic I can damned well copy it and paste it into the search bar of a new window.
Very, very tempted to go and trade the stuff back in with no penalties (there's still time, I think). I'd have to buy a new plastic cover for the new iPhone, but I have those $6 cross-stitch iPhone covers I haven't even decorated yet for a cover...thoughts? Is it worth taking a loss on the accessories I've already bought for the current new stuff?

[John to Greg] 'So come on, be straight with me... well, be gay with me, do you fancy him?'
--
[Mycroft] 'I am annoyed.'
[John] 'About...?'
'About you believing that I have romantic feelings for one of Sherlock's acquaintances.'
'Friend, he's a friend.'
'Is Sherlock calling him that?'
'Sherlock has trouble admitting that you're his brother.'
'Yes, well...'
'And that I'm his boyfriend. He just kind of rambles on when people ask before finishing with, 'He's the most important person in my life'. Kind of sweet, really.'

I was surprised in '12 to learn that child size scarves weren't as easy to find as I'd thought, so I made several and sold most. One lady asked me to make a baby scarf and I said no, for obvious reasons.

I'm a bit crispy now. There was an "org day," a "fundatory" event hosted by Chris's battalion, and unlike last year, Chris didn't have to cook. (And it wasn't in Middle-of-Nowhere, Old Post either!) There were paintball and a rock-climbing wall and a bounce house and a dunk tank but we just wandered around, watching other people do those things and talking to people when we recognized them (we had several mutual friends in Alaska, the closest to one here is JL), and I made pieces of Travis's wedding present, which means that I have, apart from the sunburns on my face and around my neck, sunburns on the backs of both my hands and lower arms. It looks weird, but I was able to get a fair amount done and I've gotten even more done since we got home.

“Welcome,” he says, takes the beer that Lestrade has brought, gives him a look for spending a bit too much time re-wiping his shoes on the mat in the hall, the it’s a floor, honestly look. And that may be true, but it’s a nice floor, all of it warm, bright wood. It’s not new, but it’s beautifully cared for. In a moment’s glance, that’s the impression that Lestrade has of all of it: neat, precise attention to a lived-in space. Nothing could be farther from Sherlock’s negligent chaos, and Lestrade has a flash of suspicion that Sherlock’s disorder is actually a learned behavior, a marker of difference.

“The fucking veneer is fine.” Was this pouting?

"I was right about the countryside," Sherlock pants, half-smiling.
John grins widely. "Oh, la di da, Sherlock was right about something, sound the alarms, prepare the cannon salute, polish the dress uniforms and ready the ceremonial sabers. What, you want a biscuit every time you're right about something? There would be no biscuits left in the world. Be a dear and call nine nine nine? My hands are full."

Mycroft twisted in his seat to see if there was anyone in the booths next to the bar, but Anthea chose that moment to throw a coaster at him.
'Can I help you, my dear?' Mycroft asked, too used to her behaviour to be bothered. He'd met her his first day at university. He'd sat alone outside near the fountain closest to his dormitory to enjoy his lunch, people-watching as usual, when Anthea suddenly plopped down beside him, declared him interesting, and promptly started a conversation. By the end of the hour Anthea was his self-declared best friend and Mycroft had never managed to get rid of her.
Not that he wanted to now, of course. He lived with her and had for the past year. In the beginning she'd been interesting but rather annoying. She was still annoying, but Mycroft loved her anyway. She had an eidetic memory, slapped people who insulted him, and could force Sherlock to stop throwing tantrums with a simple eyebrow raise. If Mycroft went for women he would have married her by now.

Lion Brand Kaleidoscope, wool.
Finishing up a reread of Newlywed Blues by (AO3 and LJ)Maggie_Conagher and remembering just how much of my Mycroft headcanon (and some of my Greg headcanon) comes from that story. But this time I went back and finished the stories that inspired it, Indestructible: The Sherlock Casefic Adventures by (AO3 and LJ)Ghislainem70, and I'm glad I did because when I first started reading the "Indestructible" stories I got sidetracked by other stuff before I got to the Mystrade parts, and reading those parts made "Newlywed Blues" a lot clearer (though you don't have to read "Indestructible" to understand it).
It was like the summer between freshman and sophomore year when I was really enjoying The Plains of Passage by Jean M. Auel and I was about a quarter of the way through it before I realized there were three books before it. I'd gotten the book for a dollar at a garage sale and then went and got the previous three at full price at Waldenbooks (because Waldenbooks still existed back then *sniffle*). And the one after, which came out right around the time I graduated from high school. (There's a sixth book too, and I bought it right away in hardcover, but I haven't read it yet because I plan to read or listen to the whole series again so I'll know what's going on.)
And since I was reading "Newlywed Blues" on my Nook last time, this time I was reading on my phone and it's a lot easier to take down quotes that way, so those'll be in a quotes post prolly sometime this month. I highly recommend both "Newlywed Blues" and the "Indestructible" series, especially if you're into epicfic.

At the end there was food (someone made an excellent cheeseburger casserole with tater tots on it, and someone else made some awesome brownies) and the putting together of care packages.

Sherlock ate chocolate by the pound, lay about for days immersed in a book and the weight melted off of him like warmed butter. Mycroft wondered if it was possible to schedule an appointment with the Almighty to discuss his notion of fairness…
--
“What did you do?”
“I called your defiler and attempted to persuade him to forego your instructions and make himself present immediately, but he refused. Not even the knowledge that you were waffling like a confused terrier over your outfit could force him to accede.”
Mycroft dropped heavily on the bed next to his personal demon and laid his head in his hands.
“Yes, you should be upset. He is a bounder if he will not relieve your distress over your grotesque appearance.”
“I am going to kill you. I am going to evict your soul from your body. Your flesh shall be feasted upon by the hounds of hell and I shall deliver it in silver bowls to their lair personally!”

The first full cup. The first one I made I wound up dumping out. First I tried it plain (cardboard-y, yuck). Then I added milk (weird!) (my tea was opaque) (opaque tea what the fuck) and that was better, less cardboard-y, kind of bland. (I think next time I'll try it with the Coffee-mate.) It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either so I dumped it out. The cup of PG Tips I have now has my usual three packets of Splenda in it. It's...better than with the milk, but still not as good as the organic green tea or Tazo chai. But I do think adding the coffee creamer will be worth a try. And/or regular granulated sugar.
Sherlock Fic Recs #2
Apr. 28th, 2013 02:37 pmFreckles, by (AO3)moriarteakettle. Greg/Mycroft. In which Mycroft has issues and Greg kinda fails, then Anthea is awesome and by the end Greg is awesome too. This story has a canon character death that will probably make you cry. Read the trigger warnings!
Compatible, by (AO3)Cardstock. Truly hot Johncroft with a pinch of Johnlock/Holmescest. Explicit.
Primark Scuffed and Oxford Polished, by (AO3)ElapsedSpiral. Mycroft/Greg with a side of John/Sherlock. Good Mycroft character study.
Time And Time Again, by Anonymous. Sherlock and Mycroft gen. Sherlock being the protective brother in the present interspersed with poignant backstory.
Indebted, by (t)plantinaboot. Greg/Mycroft by the end. Sherlock owes Mycroft a big debt and decides to repay it by getting Mycroft and Lestrade together. Adorably cracky.
Mutual Gratification, by (AO3)Elfbert. Greg/John. John loves that Lestrade loves sucking cock. I just love orally-fixated!Greg and John's POV is damned hot. Explicit.
Historically Correct, by (AO3)Eryn. Greg/Mycroft. Greg has a passion for historic reenactment, but Mycroft has no interest in participating. Until he feels his position is Gregory's life is threatened. He quite enjoys the outcome. I'm not sure what kind of reenactment it is, but it's a good story. Also, dom!Lestrade. :D Explicit.
Can't Keep a Good Man Down, by (t)eventhorizon451. Greg/Mycroft. Greg's stuck in a hospital bed and wants some life-affirming nookie. Mycroft is less than accommodating. Dialogue-only. Explicit. A++ for banter.
Can't Start A Fire Without A Spark, by (AO3)Elfbert. Greg/John. John is rescued from a Mosh Pit by a handsome stranger. Years later, he meets his rescuer again... Adorable. Explicit. If I weren't such a polite reader I'd be clamoring for a sequel.
Covert/Overt, by (AO3)Elfbert. Greg/Mycroft pre-slash. Greg is undercover. Mycroft doesn't realize this until he's nearly blown said cover. He plays along. R-ish, nothing explicit.

Loops & Threads Charisma. I really like working with this yarn but I'm almost out of it because I'm not supposed to be buying yarn, even when it's on sale because "frivolous spending." And I'm almost out of it. I'm keeping track of how much yarn I use up making hats and stuff and I "earn" one new skein of yarn for every two I use, but I can't buy the new ones until we're back in Florida and solvent, though I'll probably make a few exceptions for needing one more skein to finish up an already-started project.

Almost completely recovered from getting my wisdom teeth out. My mouth still feels weird but it's that absence of four teeth more than anything (though that is a bit uncomfortable so far). I had real food today for breakfast and dinner (didn't really have lunch), and chewing was kind of awkward. I guess it's gonna take awhile for the remaining teeth to get comfortable? I should have asked more questions before I went in for the procedure, but I think (I hope) they'll be calling for a follow-up. If not I'll call them myself. My wisdom teeth were the tip of the dental iceberg and I only have until Chris gets out of the army in the fall to get this shit taken care of.
Had a nice day otherwise. Chris and JL and I went to Syracuse to check out some adult stores (though we only got around to going to two, it's mostly the same stuff anyway and none of those places can hold a candle to Fairvilla anyway) and then we went to the mall and walked around for-freaking-ever (and I played some DDR) and was tired and cranky and just wanted to sit down so we went to The Melting Pot, which is in the big "Destiny USA" mall, but we didn't have a reservation (yeah, I know, WTF?, it's the freaking mall) so instead we went to Chili's because it's right next to our final Syracuse destination of Barnes & Noble, where I got a book on answers to weird but good questions (like the title, "What Did People Use Before Toilet Paper?") and Chris got some Star Wars books (yes, he's more Star Wars and I'm more Star Trek. It's a mixed marraige :P). And then we had a nice quiet drive home during which I (I mean my shameless self-insert OC, of course!) went to my daydream fic and hung out with Mycroft Holmes in the backseat of his fedmobile (Audi? Limo? Whatever the fuck it is that Mycroft gets around in) and had some quiet conversation and fell asleep on his shoulder because
Good night, I'm off to bed. Hope y'all are well. :)
Still doing okay post-wisdom teeth.
Apr. 26th, 2013 08:40 amNow I just have to make a conscious effort to shut my mouth properly (ha, ha) so that I don't keep biting the insides of my cheeks because that's the last thing that hurts much because between the surgery and the past couple of days they've been gnawed up more than I realized and the last time it was this bad was Toothache Weekend which is what led to getting my wisdom teeth out in the first place. Yay codeine, which has about as much effect on me as over the counter painkillers have on people who find over the counter painkillers effective. (Yes, I'm taking it as directed. I know better than to mess around with a prescription medication that has a "controlled substance" warning on the bottle.)
More sleeping (or trying to), and reading fic, and a How It's Made marathon on Netflix because I finished CSI: Miami. Tried brushing my teeth a few times more, but it was still uncomfortable and a bit painful. Listerine has been my friend and I feel much less grungy using that after having a ye-gods-and-little-fishes-I'm-so-sick-of-it breakfast shake. Chris offered me a bite of his bagel earlier and I couldn't chew it so no real food yet. Maybe tomorrow. I hope.

Dental surgery went well.
Apr. 25th, 2013 03:08 amI spent most of the trip home from the dentist (with a detour at the post pharmacy so Chris could get the antibiotics and painkillers) desperately trying to keep my eyes open because I had to have a breakfast shake so there'd be something in my belly when I took the painkillers...and then I got home and managed a few sips and was out like a light for what felt like only a few minutes. I spent the rest of the day with the numbness wearing off and my mouth hurting (which led to a general headache), though neither was as bad as I'd feared, and trying to spend the day sleeping and managing to doze off once in awhile. Tried to brush my teeth just now but even as gently as I did it it was awkward and it hurt but at least now I'm tasting toothpaste and not breakfast shake and sleep. :P
*le sigh* And now I'm gonna be up for awhile. I wish I could keep sleeping but I'm all slept out from yesterday, dammit.

Bernat Softee Chunky, the old kind which I bought a whole bunch of on clearance and I'm still not out of it.
Getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. Hope the next few days aren't too painful.
Four more hats. (100 Things Day 41)
Apr. 21st, 2013 03:37 pm
Got a book on fair isle knitting at Michaels that I'm going to use for notebook cross stitch patterns (one of these days I'll get the already-finished notebooks photographed so I can post those here too). Though right now I'm concentrating on using up all the yarn I already have on hats and stuff (might make some blankets out of what I have enough yarn for). I'll have a lot of patterns ready to go when I have more yarn stuff cleared out and stored and my work table cleared for the cross-stitch stuff.

Mycroft's rise through the ranks of the Civil Service had been so meteoric that it had been a while before even he appreciated where he was heading; not MI5, or M16, but the small, select, rarely acknowledged section who coordinated the work of the Intelligence services, the government, and the civil service.
Because brilliance allied to youth was rarely taken seriously by those who mattered most, Mycroft slowly developed his own style both in dress and manner that added gravitas and the impression of age to his appearance, although he thought he must have been born looking middle-aged. He learnt to adapt to the expectations of those with whom he routinely dealt, in the process learning more than he gave away. As he continued along the crooked path to power, the role he had chosen to play subsumed him - but then he had always excelled at the roles selected for him; the only difference was that this time he got to choose.
The work was complex, demanding and more satisfying than anything he had known. Chess with human pieces was so much more agreeable than the board game because human beings were so delightfully unpredictable, even in their predictability. The 'average' man could behave in the most unexpected ways; trying to anticipate every eventuality, especially when politicians' egos were involved, was particularly interesting, not least because he had never thought of himself as a 'people person'. He even developed social skills enough to ensure his work did not suffer, an achievement which brought him a degree of sardonic amusement.

I finished all of Top Gear that's on Netflix and am in season 9 of CSI: Miami. I suppose after that it's back to Law & Order: SVU and CI, or various documentaries...or re-watch Supernatural...at least there are a bunch of long series and interesting things, though I wish I had a separate account because the main page and the recommendations are mostly based on stuff Chris has watched, because he watches a bunch of movies and stuff, and I've watched a handful of documentaries and movies and other than that just long series. We can afford it for now (it's only $8/mo), but apparently this is where Chris wants to take a stand on stopping our frivolous spending. :P
ETA: Just edited all these hat pics to count for my 100 Days thing that I had forgotten about. And I have a bunch of other 100 Days pics to post just waiting at Flickr so I guess I won't be missing many days posting for quite awhile! :)
Sherlock Fic Quotes #13 (Some NSFW)
Apr. 10th, 2013 08:08 pmShips this post: John/Sherlock, John/Mary/Sherlock
"Doctor Anderson, I want to thank you for your actions on John's behalf."
Startled, Dave Anderson looks from the steady gray gaze to the outstretched hand. He takes a breath. Then extends his hand toward Sherlock Holmes.
The shake is quick, perfunctory.
Anderson clears his throat and turns away. "This changes nothing, Holmes. You're a smug tosser and a bloody amateur menace. Can't imagine why Lestrade or Dimmock put up with you."
Sherlock smiles grimly. "And you, Dr. Anderson, are an unmitigated arse who doesn't know his way around a crime scene and have single-handedly cocked up more forensic investigations than I can count."
"If I had my way, I'd have you arrested – and banned for life from the Yard. Watson must be mad, totally mad," Anderson tosses over his shoulder as he leaves.
Sherlock stands and watches him go. He says nothing – although it damn near kills him. But he rather smugly thinks that John would be proud of him for letting Anderson - this one and only time - have the last word.
"Won't ever happen again," he mutters.

I went to Syracuse again yesterday evening. I was supposed to go to Bank of America to order new checks and such but I left too late and 5pm rolled around before I even got off the interstate so I went to Hobby Lobby (they FINALLY restocked the neon house brand yarn that is very bright, and has matching colors in another house brand "fun fur" yarn, so fuzzy neon hat and scarf sets in the future) and Barnes & Noble (got the latest HALO book for Chris and the latest SPN book for myself). And the usual FarmVille, fanfic, Tumblr, and audiobooks. At the moment (well, not right *this* moment, I'm writing a blog post but...yeah) I'm making more hats (finishing up a "Gryffindor" hat in Caron SimplySoft) and watching CSI: Miami on Netflix.
Yesterday's trip to the mall went well.
Apr. 3rd, 2013 11:34 pmI got some D20s that a friend who makes jewelry and sells it at the PX should be able to make into charms with a bit of wire, and I got some Jaffa cakes and Jelly Babies from a stuff-from-all-around-the-world shop, and had some nice conversations with various salespeople/shopkeepers. (Including one lady at Papyrus who asked if I was "near my due date." Lordy fuck, I need to diet in earnest. And get a full-body mirror. I hadn't realized it looked that bad.)
