I didn't realize this sort of thing was even a problem until I saw posts attacking the idea of the "fake geek girl" on Tumblr. I've been a nerd/geek/dork/dweeb/take your pick/all of the above ever since I can remember. I've been a reader since before I can remember, a Trekkie since Kindergarten and a hard-core Trekkie since sixth grade. But no one ever called me out as not being a real geek. Whether that's because I was reading whenever the teacher wasn't speaking and everyone could see that (one time in middle school I almost walked into a stop sign because I was reading on the way to school), or maybe I didn't register as "girl" to most of them because I was a short, fat, dumpy, big-boobs-were-the-only-thing-that-made-me-not-androgynous ugly geek first, or maybe because all that happened when I was in grade school--1989 to 2002--and being a geek wasn't the "cool" thing that it apparently is now.

That said, the myth of the "fake geek girl" is still out there, and it's still bullshit. And like these awesome folks, I've got nothing to prove.

After all, if I were into science fiction just to please my husband, I'd be a Star Wars fan. :P
