Binary Filet Crochet Blanket.

This, believe it or not, is a three-quarters-done crochet pattern.

binary blanket (1)

This is the poem, by [info]fizzylizard ([personal profile] vasco_pyjama), who is also the recipient (she gets most of my practice pieces ♥):

I have made many mistakes in my time
And though there are some gaping holes, none has been a crime
I see the awful chasm, I dodge it and I learn
The very same true lessons of others in their turn.
I learn how to be patient, I learn to hold my tongue
A lesson some still need to learn, though they have stopped being young.
I try to learn of kindness, a gift not out of reach
But difficult to capture, and harder still to teach.
Being gentle is important too, as most good people know,
And bit-by-bit I’ve picked it up, though sometimes I am slow.
Mistakes I’ve made in plenty, I cannot tell a lie,
The lesson I remember most is ‘Have another try’.

This is the slow, slow process.

And here is the yarn I'm using:

binary blanket (8)

Small sample of how perfect this yarn is for the project:

binary blanket (9)

...I just hope that that yarn is enough to make the whole blanket, because it's acrylic with a mohair look that came in 60's-style packaging (before I rolled it; I roll all my yarn out of habit because when I first started crocheting, in high school, I was broke and could only get a little at a time so rolling it made the project last longer...now it just makes the project easier once it starts) and I got it at a thrift store and seriously doubt I could find more anywhere.

Despite how very tedious the translation process is, I'd totally do more of these for the ol' shop. Though if any of you have an idea to make the translation process easier/shorter, I'd loooove to hear it.

I'm also hoping this project will last the whole way from Alaska to New York. :P

ETA:

Thanks to the Binary Converter, I've got it all done and I just separated it into inches, to get an idea of the dimension, and it's gonna be 5 ft wide by 3 ft tall:

Heh. In the time I was typing my comment and contemplating how much work it would be to write a program that would generate a pattern from text input, wondering what you've got on your computer, etc etc, you found a much easier solution.

Hello, Rube Goldberg's ghost, nice to see you hanging around. ;)
