Senator Elizabeth Warren challenges defense industry contractors over Right To Repair

It's really simple. There are many defense systems that the military own - flat-out own - that they are not allowed to repair! They have to wait for parts, or DRM unlocks by defense contractor specialists, before repairs can be effected. As a result, units needing repair are sometimes cannibalized to keep other units in fighting condition.

Which is an absolutely insane situation for any military to be under. Yet, because of DRM and other contractual limitations that defense contractors have been allowed to restrict the Pentagon with, it's reality. The article states the example of a knob - a simple knob - for a "Black Hawk helicopter screen control knob that costs $47,000 as part of a full assembly could be manufactured independently for just $15." This is just one example of the insanity that the military has to deal with because of contractual and DRM lockdown and lock-in. The military's personnel are trained to maintain the equipment, they have the tools and 3D printers to print things. But they are not allowed to.

Senator Warren (D) is on the committee that is currently preparing the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.

China greatly loosens visa restrictions for STEM degree holders

GREATLY loosens! Even people with just Bachelor degrees are potentially eligible - and freshly-minted ones at that! If the degree is in robotics, AI, or new materials - and even if you don't have a job-offer from a Chinese company - you might be able to waltz into China and start marketing yourself.

This includes teachers in these subjects.

[pain] today in Descartes: green is the best colour because it is most like an octave

... Nor shall I say what objects of vision must be agreeable or disagreeable to it; for from what I have already said about the other senses, it is easy to grasp that light that is too strong will injure the eyes and moderate light must refresh them; and that, amongst the colours, green, which consistss in the most moderate action (which by analogy one can speak of as the ratio 1:2), is like the octave among musical consonances, or like bread among the foods that one eats, that is, it is the most universally agreeable.40

40 What the basis of this remark is is unclear, and although various writers have made suggestions about the relations between colours and sounds, the attempt to quantify green on a par with an octave certainly cannot be sustained. It is worth noting that Descartes will later advice Elizabeth to rid her mind of sad thoughts by reflecting on the greenness of a wood (Descartes to Elizabeth, May/June 1645, AT iv. 220).

“His Mother-in-Law”

Posted by Greg Ross

He stood on his head by the wild seashore,
And danced on his hands a jig;
In all his emotions, as never before,
A wildly hilarious grig.

And why? In that ship just crossing the bay
His mother-in-law had sailed
For a tropical country far away,
Where tigers and fever prevailed.

Oh, now he might hope for a peaceful life
And even be happy yet,
Though owning no end of neuralgic wife,
And up to his collar in debt.

He had borne the old lady through thick and thin,
And she lectured him out of breath;
And now as he looked at the ship she was in
He howled for her violent death.

He watched as the good ship cut the sea,
And bumpishly up-and-downed,
And thought if already she qualmish might be,
He’d consider his happiness crowned.

He watched till beneath the horizon’s edge
The ship was passing from view;
And he sprang to the top of a rocky ledge
And pranced like a kangaroo.

He watched till the vessel became a speck
That was lost in the wandering sea;
And then, at the risk of breaking his neck,
Turned somersaults home to tea.

Happy birthday Wendy Carlos too

I am endlessly amused that V and my mom have the same birthday. This is all the proof I need that astrology is unreliable: I could hardly imagine two more different people.

V liked the present I got for them, a t-shirt that says "All done" on it, under a sheet ghost who is apparently doing the bsl sign for that thing? I didn't even know that, V told me. I already thought sheet ghost (which they love) plus sentiment they find very relatable was good enough, but they're even more delighted with it than I expected.

And the flowers I ordered for my mom actually did turn up (doing this kind of thing internationally when you're sending them to the middle of nowhere is always an ordeal and I had to use a new company this year so I worried)!

Mom sent me an email thanking me. I even got what was clearly meant to be a photo attached, but is instead a two-second video of the flowers sitting on their kitchen counter. Which is even cuter if anything.

(I only get like one photo from my parents a year, because in between they forget how to attach them to emails.)

Wounded Christmas Wolf

christmas book cover with a couple, falling snow, small town

It is free book time again! This is a Christmas romance, a full length novel unrelated to my other series (though obviously it has shifter-romance-style werewolves in it). The link will work until the book goes live on Amazon on the 21st.

This book went through heavier rewrites than my books normally do, so please let me know if you notice any typos or inconsistencies and I will try to fix them!

As always, no obligation, but feel free to download and enjoy.

Where Have I Been? What Have I Been Doing?

 One really fun thing that I did lately is finally listen to/read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

This came about because my son has heard me go on and on since I read Frankenstein for the first time earlier this year about how GAY Victor Frankenstein was for his most sincere friend Henry Clevral. Being Mason, he said, "Oh, huh. Have you ever read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? I recommend it," without, of course, spoiling the fact that it's pretty much common knowledge the Robert Louis Stevenson had based Jekyll and Hyde on his real life gay friends.

If you doubt me, check out the Wikipediea entry's "inspiration and writing" section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strange_Case_of_Dr_Jekyll_and_Mr_Hyde#Inspiration_and_writing  Stevenson apparently literally named Jykell after a reverand who was very likely gay and several of his known gay associates, specifically John Addington Symonds. Symonds apparently read Jekyll and Hyde and said (and I paraphrase), "I am in this book and I don't like it."

Anyway, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is short and well worth the read.

Having thoroughly enjoyed that experience, I have been pondering if there are other classics that I've ignored over the years due to the trauma of having been an English major. (When one is forced to read a lot of classic leterature, one grows weary of its ponderousness.)  My friend [personal profile] naomikritzer has talked me into trying out Anne of Green Gables. I'm not sure how well this one will stick because it is in no way genre or genre adjacent like Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  But, we'll see. I found someone on Spotify who did a lovely podcast of Anne of Green Gables with multiple voice actors playing the various roles, so it could generally just be a fun way to experience the book.

I know it's not Wednesday, but what are you reading? Anything fun? Anything weird? Anything AWFUL?

(no subject)

Have determined that the ren faire shop put me in the wrong size corset. Either that or their pattern is wildly bad for my body shape. It's an underbust so I was avoiding the worst of my fit issues. They only had the one length, so I knew to expect that it'd hit my thighs when sitting. (I am absurdly short-waisted.)

In an attempt to tighten the bottom enough to not be able to fit my closed fist longways on either side of hip while also having room for my closed fist shortways in front of my lower stomach, I have tightened the damn corset enough that the bottom two (of six) pairs of lacing are touching. Also despite having balcony seating for a family of four there is also significant gaping around the top of this thing. I have an inch maybe two of reduction around my middle.

This is comically ill-fitted at this point. I was wearing two thin linen dresses and a pair of linen pants I only wear under longer things when I got fitted. I thought the fit issues I had at faire were because the damn thing was too long.

I guess I'll take pictures and reach out to see how to return it. I might be able to get out to faire again before end of season, but I also might not.
